After six years of trying to solve this problem I woke up one morning and the solution was clear - I'll be releasing a new version of Smoke Strings within the next few weeks.
Smoke Strings is a solution for generating cigarette-style smoke as a mesh object. The previous version is script based while the new one runs on clean-burning nodes.
I'm alpha testing it right now but it should be ready soon! I am very excited about this tool - I know it will be very useful for my type of work and I'm sure that others will find it useful as well.

Holy cow the new Smokestrings is up and ready to roll - I must say, I am very pleased with this tool. For all you 3d-fxicans out there I think you'll appreciate the ability to quickly and intuitively generate the elusive cigarette wispy smoke.
Also - I've got a trial cut of maya 2011, so Ill be able to update the shark rig that everyone complains about. I swore I would never upgrade but the times they are a changin. 8.5 forever!

Just uploaded a bunch of new flash template files. Haven't had time to arrange assets in a while but these ones are pretty good, I know I use them all the time, give them a look if you're into flash stuff!

The Smoke Strings is updated, my favorite and most recent animation tool. By setting the particle mass to 0 you can in effect use this tool to create a light trail effect. Also included i nthe new version is spring control as I was dissatisfied with the way particles would fly away from each other making the ribbon wig out and make weird shapes.
The video should be up soon - give it a look!
