IK FK Arm Setup Tutorial
- A 45 min comprehensive tutorial on how to setup an ik/fk arm
- How to avoid some pit falls with building an ik fk setup
- Building simple animation controls
- Simple blending without constraints and using the power of utility nodes
- How to build a seamless switching script that is BUILT IN THE RIG
- Script will work with referencing and make it so the arm will NEVER pop or float between modes
I am including the final file (Should work with Maya 7.0, let me know
if it does not) and the code used for making the ik fk switch.
Note: You must have zooToolBox installed and the scripts installed in
the correct directory. This process is explained in the video.

Dear sean_nolan!
Would you so kind to tell me where can I find the "new cmd ..." marking menu command (which opens the "edit command window")? Is it a script/plugin from somewhere? Unfortunatelly I don't find it in Maya 2009. (Neither in zooTools.)
Thank you in anticipation,
golem
Great tut, even tho its 2 years old, I feel this solution still works elegantly. I guess in a production environment studio may not want to include embedded mel scripts for the IK / FK switch. But for my personal projects this is certainly better than mucking about with weight blends and a maze of connection nodes.
Just to confirm I got this to work in Maya 2011.
@golemson - you need to install the zootoolbox, which gives you the function to attach custom mel to RMB menu. Watch the start of the video where Sean shows you how to install the dagMenuProc elements.
Hi John,
Thank you for the kind words and glad it's still helpful. Just to add, I did use this setup in a production env where multiple characters in the same scene had this setup and worked perfectly with the embedded script. Since the script and connections are specific to the character it deals with namespacing quite well. I guess as long as Hamish keeps his zooTools updated with the new versions of Maya then this setup can hopefully live long.
Cheers,
-Sean

I'm having trouble getting the new cmd... to display on RMB. I am using 2011 and have used the appropriate dagMenuProc and I do see the line in the code where it should be but I get nothing when I right click. I know I'm missing something but I can't figure out what.
Also is there away to run the script for the snapping back and forth from a marking menu I try to do this but get syntax errors.

i m having problem getting the new command..
how to add new command in right click marking menu
now i am using maya2009...
You mentioned in your video you were interested in hearing better ways to do this. Did you ever see the tutorial by Char Robert Morgan from Double Helix? I have the files for the script if you want to check it out. He uses a script job to automatically switch when you select the different parts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupDfs3C4V0&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SPFE33A43309C0097B
