Beside hue value, visible light can be described by color temperature. The unit of color temperature is Kelvin. Typical daylight color temperature is between 5500 6500K, it can be used to determine the lights hue value. For example, the color of a star lies on its temperature. The one with higher temperature is bluish, and the one with lower temperature presents orange.
Visible lights are just a very small portion of spectrum. They radiate by different wavelength, because of which, they are differentiated to blue, red, infrared ray, ultraviolet ray and so on.
This image shows the different color temperature light setup. In mental ray Maya, we can use mib_blackBody or mib_cie_d light utility to calculate color temperature of light.
Connect a mib_blackBody to a light shader.

The middle party is flame with bluish is with lower energy and therefore the temperature is lower. But the top of flame with reddish is hot and with higher energy.
Color model can be switched and remapped by using Maya utility nodes.
following shader network illustrates how to using remapColor node to remap RGB value.
