invade is a Maya MEL script, that can be used to duplicate objects in 1D, 2D or 3D, giving you also the ability to distribute the duplicated objects over any nurbs or polygonal surface of your choice.

The script lets you also randomize the duplications, by randomizing the translation, rotation and scale.

This version doesnt have the ability to align the objects to the normals of the surface on which they are distributed, it also doesnt take into account the size of the objects so they may overlap.
