Export STL from Maya for 3D printing
Does this work with Maya 2008?
edit:
it seems to be working fine with Maya 2008.
Thanks.
following this intallation details step by step,i selected model object, and clicked script shelf.
but no response in the last step.why?!why?!why?!
Very useful script!
Some comments:
1. Maya 8.5 scripts are now located at /Users/Shared/Autodesk/maya/8.5/scripts
2. Save script as "Best Guess" without an extension. STL extension will automatically be created. Check Scale. Alternatively, use .MA Format, but erase extension and name "desiredName.stl". Scale might be more accurate.
3. ***CAUTION** Some Scale problems possible. Script seems sensitive to units and SaveAs Format settings. No errors with Units set to CM and SaveAs format set to .MA in popup. Simply highlight default "untitled.ma" and rename "desiredName.stl".
When process repeated (units = cm) with SaveAs format as BestGuess (leaving extension blank, such as "desiredName" without any extension) the file reimported approximately 1/2 the size.
When repeated (units=inches), file re-imported about 1/25 smaller using BestGuess format without any extension.
Other variables may affect scale, so be sure to check results!
not happy. I put all the files in the download folder in every maya script folder on my computer and restarted it a bunch of times and i'm getting nothing when i run the script on a piece of polygon mesh.

Maya 09 - Mac

you need to highlight "mayaExportSTL()" when you save script to shelf
Thanks :)
Does anyone know how this might function with Maya 2010?
The file system for it (and on a Mac, no less) is different than specified, but I am curious about its ability to work with 2010.
I am in the same boat as Mr. Weekley..( I am on Pc though)
i tried it aswell...
no succes....
then i found Multitool
this is a freeware plugin for maya and works very nice....
Hi all - tested in 2010 and seems to work fine - please let me know any specific issues that come up.
hi i dont get the option to export as .STL ? any suggestions??
I highlighted "mayaExportSTL()" when I saved the script to the shelf. It now tries to export files but no .STL option. Why is that? I figured it out. Don't save as per normal. When you're ready to save, select the object and then click the script button. It will prompt you to save (as per the instructions). Save as .mb or .obj or whatever you would usually save it as. You'll notice it goes triangulated (again, as mentioned in the instructions). Select it and then again click the script button. The editMB, editMA, and 'move' options all save as STL. I'm not sure what the difference is between these formats, but I am new to the STL format myself and that is no failing on the part of the plug-in. Now you should be able to export.
Im on a pc running Maya2011 and I've run into the same problem as everyone here. Tried all the suggestions and the .stl option still does not appear when i run the script (or saves a .stl when i save again after saving .obj/.mb)
any help or directions to other scripts would be appreciated
Hi all - just tested this in Maya 2011 and it works just fine with no updates. After you've selected your poly objects, and run mayaExportSTL from the MEL command line it will bring up a dialog box about where you want to save the file. Make sure to name your file <filename>.stl. If you choose the type Maya ASCII (ma) it will make the file <filename>.ma.stl but it is a valid STL file.
Cheers,
Rob
Hi friends--I hv just tried to run this in maya 2011..nothing happened .even there was no error msg in the help area. Please help me to run this script for exporting a poly to .stl
Holy crap it just worked now!! so I had no stl option to save it but I just put a random name with a stl. extension at the end and it just worked without having to have the stl option in the saving presets. Cheers!
I have a file to upload but I don;t know where. Anyway if you are still stuck send me an email on nachtmusic8@yahoo.com and I will send you my mini tutorial.
This mel. works great and make make maya even more useful.
