Did you check to see if it was loaded in the Plug-in Manager? Sometimes it can get disabled.
Window --> Settings/Preferences --> Plug-in Manager
Make sure "Mayatomr.mll" has "Loaded" and "Auto load" checked on.

yeah, great idea :) i totally forgot to check for mental ray... thanx man :)
i have installed maya 2011 few months ago, and i had mental ray and used it normaly, but yesterday when i started maya, there was no mental ray?!
anybody knows the answer?
