As far as everyone knows(rumors) discreet had previously cancelled their intel/amd based flame/inferno like product called strata/mezzo. Especially since they showed it last year at NAB and it was no where to be seen this year at NAB. The economy is just not into buying 200-300k systems right at this moment.

Hi folks,

strata/mezzo is cancelled because 5D and Cyborg is dead too.

Maybe, in the next future they release a Power Cyborg/Combustion.... : )

flame/flint/smoke have always been 32-bit apps. They wsould have already been ported to Linux if it was just a software issue.

The problem is that many functions in the discreet advanced systems toolsets are dependent at a very low level on the SGI hardware.

There is just no way to "do it" on a PC (or mac).....

Wintel and MAC systems generally use "compartmentalized" hardware sub-systems.

That is to say that memory, graphics, I/O and processor functions are not integrated the same way (as tightly) as they are inside an SGI computer.

Of course, as the speed of CPU's increase, the extra performance that discreet got from SGI hardware will continue to become less-and-less of a benefit -all of the functions will be done "in software".

I'm sure that discreet is waiting for the right time to announce their plans for the FFI/SF lne.
