Be sure to sign up for their free classes and take advantage of the training credit... but yes, it's great deal if you are self motivated.

Houdini was called Hardini by many of my students, but it is a great package and offers some different and useful approach compared ot XSI or Maya. The tutorials are a good place to start but even the Houdini Sidefx edu rep said the best way to learn houdini is to have someone show it to you and watch someone use it. Get ready for Houdini5 it looks awsome!

Not much Houdini at Siggraph this year, I meet only a guy demonstrating Houdini on SUN...

It looks like a very complex software and I understand that in US, the 6 month offer is valid only for California residents.

Am I wrong?

Its also availble to Toronto area residents as well seeing many studios in the area use houdini. As for other regions.. I don't know. Best bet is to email sidefx and ask, or check out the mailing list.

I'm not sure either about th ehome license, but yes it does apply to Toronto area too. I know the studetn license is much cheaper than XSI or Maya and is available everywhere.

Lots of companies use Houdini, it is fairly complex at first but makes things that would be complex easy compared to other packages. You might want to look at Houdini Select when it comes out too.
