the dysfunctionality of the fingers was a mistake from my part and I apologize for that. I have however fixed it and updated the rig.

thank you for downloading
happy animating

Used your rig and I really liked how clean and simple it was. A couple problems though.
1) Fingers rotate/curl really slow, it takes forever to make a pose with his fingers.
2) Seems like a couple controls are redundant around his shoulders.
3) Not really a problem but it would be great if there was a way to show he speaks, no blend shapes but maybe a jaw on the piece on his face. Just up and down would be handy.

Thanks for the great rig, I have a short animation of him on my site. http://www.philjohn.blogspot.com/

1. There is no way to select the robot's controls directly in a window - you have to go into Outliner or Heirarchy to get at them.

2. The head controls are rotated on the X Axis, making smooth motion in anything but the forward-and-back direction nearly impossible to create

3. There doesn't seem to be any way to manipulate one arm or one leg, just both at the same time.

4. The arm controls are at the character's feet, making it difficult to work with.

Once all of the above are addressed, this will be a killer rig, as it works well even on an older machine. Looking forward to future updates.

It looks like the rig has been updated for Maya 8.5. I opened it and have had no problems whatsoever, and it does not cause any lag for me either. Even on the higher divisions setting, the only lag I see is when you move the entire rig, and that's just a slight lag. I love how cool this rig looks. And for some reason, I really like that you can control his toes indepently lol.

Roboter is a very useful rig and is really fun to animate. Great job ! One thing that can make it better is to add a way to select all controlers easily (FK + IK controlers).

I made an animation with it, you can see it in my blog :

Enjoy !

Nice job on the rig! I like how it's very simple with little to get in the way of posing

There are, however, a few things I'd like to point-out/request:

1] The COG controller is a bit to tightly-spaced around the robot's pelvis. It would be a lot easier to grab that controller if it were bigger than the pelvis (in X and Z)

2] Also, it would be nice to have 1 or 2 more controllers within the COG (just stacked beneath the current one) in order to allow layering COG animation

3] The chest itself needs a controller for it. It's currently not possible to pose a nice "S" shape to his spine because there is no supporting controller for the chest. I'm not asking for a stretchy-spine -- just a controller for the chest for rotations

4] The shoulder controllers are not as useful as they could be. Right now, it's impossible to have the robot do a proper "shrug". The shoulder controllers need to have their centers at the middle of the chest (not directly middle, but "middle" in terms of the X-axis)

5] The finger rotations need to be opened up quite a bit more. There is not enough control given to the animator to pose them properly. The Thumbs sliders, in particular, rotate the joints in a very strange mix of axes

6] Speaking of fingers, it would be nice to have "splay" controls to widen his fingers apart from each other.

7] When I switch from IK to FK on the foot controls, the legs slide to what looks like a different default pose

8] It would be awesome to have a separate "Hips" controller so that, when IK is active on both legs, the Hip ctrl would just rotate the pelvis, but keep the upper-body where it is (useful when posing the robot standing, but keeping weight on just one leg)

9] I know that this is a robot with rigid body-parts, but don't be afraid to weight it if you're finding that parts of him intersect. It'll look fine when animated

Nice rig so far! Keep it up!

First off, I just got the new Maya 2010 and spent all of yesterday using your rig. I've really enjoyed working with it, but today I tried to open up those files, and none of the animations I was working on that includes your rig will open. Maya keeps crashing. Now, I know that this rig wasn't built for 2010, (I'm sure none of the rigs here are updated to 2010 yet), but I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I can open up the rig just fine, but any time I add any animation, save it, close out of Maya, then try to open the file again, I get an error and Maya has to shut down. Any advice would be welcome.

I LOVE this rig! I like that there are individual IK/FK switches for the limbs, rather than the whole body.

First of all this rig is amazing, No bones and a great low poly model makes for speedy animation time, but I really would like some UVs on it, and it doesn't like to render properly because half of the face normals are flipped.

To use in Maya 2013, open in text editor and remove these 2 lines:
createNode colladaDocument -n "colladaDocuments";
connectAttr "lightLinker1.msg" ":lightList1.ln" -na;
Then open in Maya and run 'Optimize'. Save as new file...
However, I found that the thigh, knee, and calf twist around when the legs are extended forward, so perhaps something is lost in the translation...

TO TRANSFER UVS TO THE MODEL

ok I found the solution, the Mesh was combined, simply select "Low" mesh, then go to mesh-->separate.
2. select the mesh, clone it,
3. go to your UV software, unflatten the Mesh,
4. load it back into Maya, select Low mesh again,
5. turn off the Intermediate Object option, Select all the objects in the Low folder, delect the UVs
6. deselect the low mesh, import OBJ, Select OBJ,
7. select the corresponding obj in the Low mesh folder
9. select Transfer Attributes in Mesh (must be in Polygon mode - click reset settings), choose component, apply..done, your UVs will be on the Rigged Character.

Notes:
- Section2. Select one the meshes you want to clone (don't select Low)
- The Intermediate Object option is inside the Roboter_LowShapeOrig node found in the Transfer
Attributes Tab.

(Make sure the Intermediate Object Option is Off in the ShapeOrig Node BEFORE TRANSFER OF ATTRIBUTE IS APPLIED), it may have turned it self on again. Don't worry if you see UV's when ticking the option off after having deleted them the first time - your UVs will automatically paste themselves in as the Intermediate Option will turn it self on again after the transfer of attributes has been applied).

Here is my non-commercial music video vfx breakdown test using roboter. Awesome rig and fun to use. Here is my render trailer with Roboter Rig. It’s really awesome. Niklas Wennersten must be given a medal for this.
